If you want the BGP router to advertise any other routes, such as routes to local networks, you must add those routes to the BGP routing table explicitly. For example, your BGP router needs to advertise the company’s IP block to the ISP. You must add a route to that block to the BGP routing table (Figure 7-18).

You add routes from the BGP router’s IP routing table, either by injecting the routes or by redistributing them from another protocol, such as OSPF, or from static or connected routes.

The next pages explain the injection method in more detail, as it is the approach that you should typically take.

Although redistributing routes enables you to import many routes into the BGP routing table with a single command, you do not have the same level of control provided by injecting routes. For example, redistributing OSPF routes into BGP adds all of the OSPF routes indiscriminately, including many private routes that you should not advertise to your ISPs. You can apply a route policy with the redistribute command to filter out undesired routes, but this approach is usually more complicated than you require.

 Redistribution

To redistribute OSPF or static routes into BGP, perform the following:
