FIGURE 122 Ex. 3—Guess 3
We continue to have a score of 3, but now every peg is out of position. This is not necessarily bad news, because we can now make four conclusions:
1. The C peg belongs in position 4.
2. The B peg belongs in position 3.
3. The A peg belongs in position 2.
4. Based on the fact that the score has not increased from the previous guess, the D peg does not belong in the sequence.
Conclusions #1 to #3 were easily determined because the A, B, and C pegs only had one of two possibilities, as we determined from our second guess. Since we chose wrong for all three pegs, we now know the correct positions for each. With this information, we can now construct our next guess. Position 2 will have peg A, position 3 will have peg B, and position 4 will have peg C. The remaining position will have the next type of peg we haven’t used yet, which is E (Figure 123).
