Chapter 22

Outside, the wind was still howling. Lightning flashed across the distant horizon, briefly illuminating sections of the mainland promenade. Kara remained in the fort’s entrance tunnel and rested against the wall, put off by the dismal weather. How had everything become so grim so rapidly?

Even with a coat and hood, it wasn’t the sort of night you wanted to be out in. Rain lashed down, leaving the stone shiny and wet. OK, deep breath, it was time to get her sensible head on. There was no point in getting soaked for no reason. What she needed to know was exactly where Zach had gone. With that in mind, she pulled her phone out of her pocket and dialled his number. To her astonishment, he actually answered.

‘Zach, where are you?’ she yelled, trying to ensure she was heard over the rain and thunder.

‘In the bay about to get myself off this shitty piece of rock.’

Kara could hear the waves hitting the shore in the background.

‘Stay there. Don’t leave.’

Was that the rattle of his car keys?

‘Please.’

‘Kara…’ It grew quieter on his end, which she realised was because he’d got inside the car.

‘Please, Zach. Don’t go. Not yet. I’m on my way.’ Phone still in her hand, she sprinted into the rain, took the rope bridge at a run again, and then slipped and slid her way down the treacherous cliff path to the car park in the bay. The causeway was clear, the tide still way out. A little jolt of relief fired through her nerves when she realised he’d done as she asked and waited.

Good, because she was damned if she was going to let one poor decision ruin everything. The three of them were good together. They really were. These last nine months had been the best days of her life, and she wanted to keep on living them.

Zach’s white Volkswagen was sitting in the end bay with the headlights on and the engine running. Kara went straight for the driver’s door and banged on the cloudy glass.

Zach wound down the window.

Kara wasted no time in leaning in and kissing him hard.

‘Don’t go,’ she begged. ‘Please. Running isn’t going to solve anything. I’m sure we can work things out.’

Brown eyes brimming with sorrow, Zach leaned over and pushed her wet hair back off her face. He wiped away the rain and tears too. Not that she’d realised that she was crying until he did so.

‘Don’t pretend he’s going to change his mind, Kara. I can’t think of a single decree he’s ever made that he’s later rewritten, no matter how much it’s fucked up everyone else.’

‘That still not a reason for you to leave. Stay. Stay with me.’

‘In the radio room? It’ll still be his roof. I don’t want to be near him right now. I don’t want to be on his property, or in any way under his jurisdiction. He’s just sunk me, Kara. A restaurant can’t survive without customers, and he’s just taken them all away without a single thought for me.
