Tripp paced back and forth across his childhood bedroom, bare feet scudding across well-worn floorboards. He’d tried sleeping, but the heartbroken expression on Sadie’s face haunted him. He never should have let things progress as far as they had. Yeah, the attraction was mutual and way off the charts, but he knew there was zero chance for anything other than a brief affair. His backpack and laptop defined home for him, wherever in the world he happened to land, while Sadie would always call Beau’s Folly home. A long-distance relationship was impractical, especially when Sadie deserved a man who loved Bo Fo as much as she did.

What he wouldn’t give to be that man.

A faint knock at the door interrupted his self-recriminations.

“Come in.” He sank onto the edge of the bed, not surprised when his father entered the room.

“The floorboards squeak,” the older man said by way of explanation. “Your mother and I have a bet about what’s bothering you. I say you’re itching to leave town already. She said it’s girl problems.”

Tripp felt his lips curve upward. His mother’s intuition was still spot-on. “What did you wager?”

His father grinned, laugh lines radiating out at the corners of his eyes. “If I’m right, your mother has to make sandwiches for all the guys when they come over for poker night next week. If she’s right, I have to repaint the kitchen.”

“Does she already have a color picked out?”

Both men chuckled.

His parents’ concern eased some of the regret stewing in his gut. Tripp was used to dealing with things alone; he’d forgotten how nice, how reassuring it was, to share the burden.

“Want to talk about it?”

“Not really. But thanks for offering to listen.”

Tripp’s father rose and crossed the room. At the door, he stopped. “Your mother and I respect the decisions you make, son. We know you have to live your own life and that your journey might take you down a different road than the one we chose. We sure do miss you, though. It’s been great having you home. Just know you always have a place here should you want or need it.”

Tripp swallowed, his father’s candid admission causing a lump to form in his throat. His parents weren’t big on touchy-feely stuff so the longing in his dad’s voice made him feel selfish and thoughtless. He’d never considered that his parents would miss him this much.

“Good night, son.”

Tripp strode across the room and embraced his father. “Night, Pops. Tell Mom I think she should go with something bright and cheerful like yellow. If she decides in the next few days, I’ll still be around and can help out.”

Eyes suspiciously bright, the older man hugged Tripp back. “I’d like that.”
