Flight to the Netherlands: Saying Good-Bye to His Son
In 1938, with Nazi Germany becoming more and more threatening, Fritz Pfeffer decided to at least ensure the safety of his son. He found Werner a place on a boat bound for England, where Fritzâs brother, Ernst, would care for him. Fritz himself could not go along; due to the huge influx of refugees, England was taking only a limited number of Jews, mainly children.
After Kristallnacht, Fritz and Charlotte fled to the Netherlands. Even though Fritz was unable to obtain a residency permit, he was not sent back. But he and Charlotte were not allowed to marry in the Netherlands, either, without the permission of the German government. Fritz tried to escape to Australia, Aruba, or Chile. The coupleâs preference was Chile, where they dreamed they could breed horses. But Fritzâs immigration application was rejected. Worse, while his presence in the Netherlands was tolerated, he did not have official permission to work. He occasionally worked illegally for Samuel van der Hoeden, a dental technician. In May 1940, Fritz Pfeffer met Otto Frank, and he and Charlotte joined the group of refugees and friends who spent Saturday afternoons at the Frankâs Merwedeplein apartment. There, Fritz also met Miep and Jan Gies and the Van Pels family.
