Answer: They are all true.

“It is important to have a groundhog that is calm around people,” Bob says. A scared one might bite somebody.

Bob thought Sidewinder might be perfect for the role. To find out, he took her to meet his students.

In Bob’s class, all of the kids had special needs. It set them apart. Sometimes they felt left out. But all that changed when Bob brought Sidewinder into class. Everyone wanted to watch her turn circles. They got in line to hold and pet her. Sidewinder seemed to love everybody.

“What soft fur you have,” said one girl.

“What big teeth!” said a boy.

Their excitement spread. “What’s going on in Mr. Will’s room?” asked a boy passing by in the hall. He took a peek. Suddenly lots of kids wanted to come into the room. Sidewinder made Bob’s students feel important.

In one way, she and they were alike. She also had disabilities (sounds like DIS-UH-BILL-UH-TEES) that made it hard for her to learn. Bob explained how Sidewinder kept trying. She never gave up. Her story gave the kids hope. If they kept trying, maybe they could do things that were hard for them, too.
