‘There you go, Caitlin, get that down you,’ said Alexander, passing Caitlin a hot dog covered in brown sauce and onions.

‘I am vegetarian, Alexander, as you well know,’ Caitlin grimaced, shaking her head in disgust at the sight and smell of meat.

‘Sorry, I forgot. Oh well, all the more for me,’ Alexander grinned, stuffing the two hot dogs into his mouth at once.

‘No wonder some of the street kids still refer to the police as pigs,’ Caitlin sighed. However she soon forgot all about her partner’s insensitivity as she wandered through this winter wonderland and momentarily returned to her childhood. Her eyes were as wide as any wild cat’s, her senses heightened as if she too was going through the metamorphosis of a human turning into an animal, not so much a changing man, more a changing woman.

The Cat Man still had not let his pet snow leopard off its leash and the cat was getting more and more agitated, snorting and pawing the ground beneath its feet and tugging on the leash. ‘Yes, yes, I know you’re hungry but be patient, my kitten. We will join the merry throng when the time is right. Timing for a magician is everything, my pretty – get the timing wrong and the trick falls flat on its face… Not that the throng will be merry once we join the party!’ chuckled the self-styled Cat Man, his eyes closely watching the proceedings. The fireworks beginning would be the signal for his beautiful assistant to take to the stage. The Cat Man would remain in the shadows. It was not time for him to enter onto the stage, a stage made of ice and snow.

Something was bothering the Cat Man. He wondered if he was overplaying his hand, getting too close to the action. What if there were hundreds of undercover police men and women on the River Thames? If this turned out to be the case, he may be trapped in a circle as the magic circle became a giant noose and one that was about to be hung around his neck. The theatre of the Frost Fayre and the large audience was just too tempting for this Victorian-inspired villian to turn his back on. The danger only made it more exciting, made the challenge even greater. He could already imagine the headlines in the papers the following day: “Cat Magician Strikes Again”, “Londoners Fayre Game”, “(Snow) Leopards Never Change Their Spots!”, “The River Thames Runs Red with Blood!”

‘It is a fact, my beautiful assistant, that once upon a time an elephant on a leash was walked across the ice by a man with royal blood. It was on this very river, the River Thames. That was before the elephant ran wild, trampling the good folk of London Town beneath its very considerable feet. It is also a fact that Harry Houdini made an elephant disappear from a crate, and a German illusionist made Tower Bridge disappear into thin air. I, Cat Man
