THE WAR OF WARS

Scarcely a week had passed. Each day the caravan of refugees traveled another thirty miles or so on muddy, rutted farm roads. Every dozen miles another vehicle either ran out of fuel, or broke down. Those vehicles still operating were loaded beyond capacity, and sure to not survive such rough service for long. Alexei sent word that all the camp should gather together prior to supper. He looked over his small group with sad eyes as they gathered before him. Their heads were wrapped in rag scarves, their coats patched and worn, their faces gaunt with fear and hunger.

“My dear people,” he called to them loudly, his voice filled with confidence that even Samuel had not anticipated. Again Vladimir translated for him, although Samuel assured him that he was slowly learning the language. “We have made a goodly trek today, and I wanted to speak with you before you retire.

“We are still in danger of being discovered by the military. Our vehicles will not last much longer the way we are using them, and we have no more fuel. Tomorrow we will select four of the best trucks. Onto these we will load our food and those who cannot walk. We will drain the fuel from all other vehicles and abandon them here. The trucks will go in their slowest gears, and take every precaution to use the smallest amount of fuel possible. All of us will walk beginning tomorrow. We will continue in this manner until God opens before us a new way.”

The murmur that arose from the people was more of disappointment than disagreement. Samuel surveyed their faces and saw less fear than resolve in a sturdy people who had grown tired from a hundred years of soviet oppression—not from this sudden exodus.

Alexei continued, his voice resonating sharply in the harsh cold. “I feel compelled to caution you to strict obedience to our beliefs. Whatever people we encounter along the way, and whatever villages we enter, we will not steal their food or fuel. If we have more, we will share with them. If they have extra, we will trade for it, but we will not steal. Anyone caught breaking this commandment will be exiled from our group, and will not reach Zion. Remember your prayers. Our people will make it to Zion, of this I am sure.”

His voice grew silent, and not a soul made a sound. He looked at the ground as he continued. “You all know the prophecies. Many of us will not survive the journey.” He looked up, his eyes sober. “So, let us be humble and prayerful. We are on God’s errand, a journey we have anticipated with longing all of our lives. Now, go eat your meals and sleep safely. God bless you,” he said and stepped down from the log on which he had been standing.

The people turned away slowly, talking quietly among themselves. Samuel did not detect murmuring or dissent, but he also detected very little hope.
