Chapter Sixteen

The following morning, as a cold wind blew across the little cemetery outside the city, Ash stood at the back of the group of mourners and waited for the funeral to end.

All night, he'd tossed and turned and tried to decide whether or not to show up. He felt as if his sister's indecisiveness must be catching, because he'd made and unmade his decision over and over again. On the one hand, he felt desperately out of place, and he worried that Nina's husband had been correct when he'd claimed that no-one wanted him to show up. After all, wasn't his presence a terrible reminder of the way Eva had died? On the other hand, he'd traveled so far to pay his respects, and he had known Eva, albeit not too well, and he figured deep down that this was the right thing to do.

And then there was Nina.

So far, he hadn't spoken a word to her. She was on the front row with her family, dressed all in black. Ash hadn't really found an opportunity to go over, and of course her husband was loitering as an added deterrent. All Ash really wanted to do now was slip away as soon as the ceremony was over, although this plan was complicated by the fact that he spoke no German and so he had no idea whether the end was approaching yet. His flight was booked for the following day, but he figured that he could amuse himself in Zurich for one more night. He just had to stay strong for a little while longer.

Glancing to his left, he couldn't help but notice that several figures were standing far off in the cemetery, watching the funeral from a distance. They'd been there from the start, and although Ash told himself that this was probably just some weird Swiss tradition, he still found their presence a little disconcerting.

Finally, with little warning, the other mourners began to disperse, and Ash realized that the funeral was over. He was tempted to run to the exit, but he forced himself to remain calm and composed, and instead he began to follow everyone else. The gate was up ahead, and he knew exactly where to find the bus stop, and as he reached the exit he was actually starting to think that he might be able to escape.

At the last second, however, he felt a hand touch the side of his arm.

“Ash?”

Turning, he found that Nina had wormed her way through the crowd to reach him. A moment earlier she'd been all the way on the other side, so he figured that she must have made quite an effort.

“Sorry,” she continued, stepping aside to let some of the other mourners past. She was once again wearing a large pair of sunglasses. “I meant to talk to you earlier, but there just wasn't a chance. My mother was feeling a little weak, and I had to support her. I hope you understand.”

“Of course,” he replied, glancing around to see whether her husband was watching.
