Quickly using exposure control for fleeting subjects

When you’re traveling or on vacation you may encounter the dreaded group tour rush. What could be more frustrating than seeing the perfect shot, but the tour bus driver is ready to drive off to the next location? When I teach my international photography workshops I always explain to my participants that speed and quick reactions are critical to capture a photo of moving objects.

Figure 8-3 shows an unedited photo of a seagull and a rainbow. When I saw that fantastic scene I stopped the car, rolled down the window, underexposed the photo, and then got the shot before the gull took off. As I’ve adjusted my exposure countless times, I know how to make my photo brighter or darker within a second. I would encourage you as well to practice your exposure adjustment speed prior to your vacation trip, so when you encounter a photo opportunity that may just fly away at any second, you will have the fast reaction time needed to get the prize winning image.
