Chapter 23

Byron was in a jovial mood as he pushed aside the books and papers on my dining room table to make space for us to eat our meal. I wondered at his ability to make himself at home and take charge of my belongings. It was more an awareness than an annoyance, and I obliged him by pulling out one of the chairs and sitting down. He also sat and pulled packages of fries and steak burgers out of the bag. He proudly produced three little plastic containers and set them in front of me.

“See, I still remember,” he said smugly. I looked at the tartar sauce I liked to dunk my fries into. He had always teased me about eating fries with tartar sauce, saying normal people dipped them in ketchup. But, I never adapted to his normal, and he often deliberately ‘forgot’ to bring the tarter home with our orders. It touched me that he would get them for me this time, and I smiled. He really was charming when he wanted to be.

Byron was pleasantly surprised when I said I would have a beer with my dinner as well. He twisted the top off a bottle and handed it to me.

“Why, Bevie,” he remarked. “You are full of surprises. When did you become a beer drinker?”

“A few days ago at the beach,” I answered, and then laughed at his raised eyebrows. He toasted my bottle with his own and leaned back in his chair to watch me take the first drink. When I didn’t gag, he chuckled and picked up his steak burger.

We ate our food, wiping sauce from our faces and trying to hold the lettuce and tomatoes inside the buns. The steak burgers were famous for their sloppiness and we laughed at each other when they fell apart during bites. Though I knew I needed to keep my guard up, there was something to be said about spending time with someone who knew the ‘you’ of years past. History had its appeal, and no matter who I may end up with in the future, my past would always belong to Byron.

We chatted about non-invasive subjects for awhile, and it was actually quite relaxing. It soon led into how he had received the letter from Toni two weeks before. He decided the time was right to just come down and try to make amends with his daughter; and maybe even some others as well. He winked at me when he said others. I wondered how high up connecting with his only son was on his priority list, but I continued to listen, dipping my fries in tarter and holding them up for him to see before I stuck them in my mouth.

Byron told me he was set to go out on a fishing boat in a couple of weeks, but when he received the letter, he bought a ticket for the Inside Passage ferry that stopped daily in Ketchikan near where he lived. He got off in Canada and drove a few hundred miles to get to the U.
