She opened her eyes further, the world slowly coming back to her, as she looked up at his face, watching over her with concern.

“What,” she said, still feeling dizzy, and barely awake, almost as if she were coming back from another work, “I’m sorry,” she said to him.

“It’s okay, Ana,” he said.

“What,” she said, as she looked at him.

“you had your necklace stolen out of your pocket,” he explained, “but I’ve retrieved it now.”

She looked down at the space between her neck and the top of her breasts, where she saw and realized that her pendant was missing from where it usually hung around her neck.

How was she so careless, she thought to herself, as she felt embarrassed to herself. Oh right… maybe it was because she’d tried to bring it with her in a moment of recklessness- it was her fault somehow, she’d done this to herself, to him…

“So,” he said, “You weren’t planning on leaving just then, were you?”

“No,” she said. “Well, not necessarily, anyways.

Or, when you were on top of that building, what about then, were you?” he said, with an intense focus on her, that said

I…, she said to him, hoping that he believed it.

He looked at her, with a look that showed her that he didn’t seem to believe her, as she felt guilt rise in her, though she could keep it within herself as she kept with most things.

“I… well, not really,” she said, hoping he would believe it. Still, she felt a sense of guilt wash over her, as she looked away, even though she didn’t want to admit it... the truth.

“Nevermind,” he said, looking to the side, as she tried to keep pretending that he already hadn’t figured it out, and looked through her facade.

She stayed where she was, completely still, as he stayed by her side.

“Here,” he said, “drink some more, Ana?”

In front of her, he offered her the glass of water, and she took it carefully by the sides, making sure to not touch the bottom of the cup where he held it.

As he watched over her carefully, she sipped her water, which slightly helped her feel better, even though she felt a bit sick.

“But, what,” he asked her.

“Well,” she said, “I... I’d... broken one of the promises that I was supposed to make from the beginning, that I would lead a cursed rest of my life, and that darkness would be my only friend, and death my only lover. “

“She said this, and I hadn’t dared to face her and say sorry, or otherwise, because I deserved it I thought… for my practicing witchcraft- and, for my betrayal...”

As she explained the last part of herself, the words drifted into the air, as it became filled with silence instead.

“And, if I had to face the truth, I’ve certainly proved her words pretty true, anyways,” she said. “So, why… why wouldn’t I...” she tried to find something to say, but it became too difficult to make something.

“I… I don’t know,” she said, putting her head into her hands, covering her face in herself.
