The clerk, being nothing if not solicitous,

suggests I try it on again, confers

theatrically—sotto voce—with Tina

as I take the jacket and make my return

to the bright, half-circle of mirrors. I have lots of jackets.

It won’t hurt to choose Tina’s blue.

I say Yes, it is a very nice blue,

and I’m not simply being solicitous.

I do have a good many jackets,

and this one, I daresay, confers

a younger áffect, an almost return

to earlier days, back when I first met Tina.

Of all my jackets, this agreeable blue

seems most pleasing to Tina. So, sure, I’m being solicitous.

It confers yet a time to which I’d gladly return.
