CHAPTER EIGHT

IT WAS AFTER 7:00 pm when Niko picked Rue up from her shop. She had asked Elora to stay with her until Niko showed up. She didn’t know why. It wasn’t like Elora was capable of protecting either of them from harm when she didn’t even have an ounce of training or magic, but Rue felt better having her there. They spent the extra time decorating the front of the shop in fall themed decor. They painted leaves on the windows in red, orange, and brown. They had pumpkins and mums of yellow and purple lining the recessed entrance of the shop. Rue had used the same cute little scarecrows that Mrs. Moscato had in her mum’s as well. She had asked Niko for her mother's number so Rue could find out where she had gotten them. They had a lovely chat, and it ended with both agreeing to have lunch the following week.

When Rue arrived, she didn’t know what to expect out of Niko’s apartment, but for some reason, it wasn’t the “just moved in look” that she was met with as soon as she stepped in. Bare beige walls, tan carpet, one old green plaid couch, and a glass coffee table. That was it for the living room and open kitchen. No decorations, photos, or even a TV. She looked at Niko with a raised eyebrow.

“I haven’t gotten around to decorating,” she said sheepishly, suddenly very aware of how little her apartment was furnished.

“How long have you lived here?”

Niko closed the door, locked it, and turned back to her with a look of concentration. “Five years maybe?”

Rue gaped at her, not fully believing her. “No seriously, what’d you do, move in last month?”

Niko shook her head and shrugged. “I’ve been busy. I’m usually just here for sleeping.”

Rue looked at her like she was some kind of sideshow but didn’t comment further, not wanting to make Niko feel self-conscious about it. The more Rue learned about the detective, the more she saw her softer side and knew under all that tough cop exterior was a kind, sensitive soul.

“Come on, I’ll show you where you’re sleeping.” Niko led the way to her bedroom. Niko’s apartment was small, only one bedroom with an adjacent bathroom, but it was all she needed. She spent most of her time sleeping or laying in bed watching TV in what little downtime she took. She didn’t cook often so her kitchen was fairly bare, preferring to grab something fast on the way home or order for delivery. Everything was to make life as simple as possible since her job was so intense. Before Rue fell down that ladder and into her life, Niko thought she liked simple, but now that the witch had allowed her a peek at her life, she realized she wouldn’t mind having a messy room and walls full of photos, flowers, and mirrors. She could see herself loving purple throw pillows and clothes on the floor. Who knew the big
