Chapter Fifteen

Tosh

I woke up under a wall of muscle and surrounded by the rich scent of sandalwood and citrus. Pulled from a hair tie, one of Bala’s tightly woven curls lay across my arm. His amber eyes were closed, and the room silent as a snowy winter night. My body hurt. There was no getting around it. I felt like I’d fallen from a tree, been shot at, and operated on simply because I had.

Jah’s soft breathing from across the room pulled my eyes his way. He was tilted back on a large recliner, arms crossed and eyes closed. His face pinched with worry in the way having nightmares can cause. His natural scent was stronger than usual, calming the anxiety his absence from my bed gave. I missed his warmth beside me.

I lifted my head, and Bala startled, pulling himself off of me. He took a deep breath as he reared back, his eyes snapping to mine. “Will you ask the nurse for a pain pill and my discharge papers?” I asked, pulling my legs to my core. My right thigh hurt to the point of distraction, and I needed to pee. Bala nodded once before rising and walking into the hallway.

I pushed the blankets off, and Jah woke, rushing to stand when he saw me sliding off the bed. “Let me,” he said, scooping me into his arms.

“I can walk, you know. The doctor said I should.”

“I don’t care what he said, hush your mouth,” he mumbled, his voice sleepy and hard to understand. His accent was thick enough that I deciphered his words post utterance. “You can walk later. I need this.”

I shook my head, smiling a little. They were good alphas; what can I say. He put me on my feet then leaned against the door, waiting.

“Uh. You can go now,” I laughed the words, making shooing motions with my hand. He scowled at me, his brows closing together and lips tightening. “I’m fine. Off you go.” His frown deepened, but he kissed the top of my head and left anyway.

I cleaned up as best I could, brushing my teeth and washing my face in the small porcelain sink. The mirror was too high for me to see more than my forehead, but even it looked terrible. I tried wetting my fingers and tapping the braid to tame it, but it was all snarls of loose hair. I couldn’t wait to take a shower, and at the moment, I’d have sold my soul for one. I took care of the rest of my needs and changed into the sweats and tee-shirt left in the room. I still had two IVs that needed to come out, but then I was ready.

Back in my room, the doctor waited, a team of students and residents behind him. “You look better,” he said to me, pointedly ignoring my alphas. Bala growled, and Jah’s lips tightened.

It really was a miracle that they shared so well. Most alphas couldn’t stand to be in a room together, as evidenced by my duo’s reaction to the alphas mixed into the medical crowd.
