Moreover, for Kierkegaard, putting ethics at the centre led to despair; as he said:

Every human existence not conscious of itself as spirit, or not personally conscious of itself before God as spirit, every human existence which is not grounded transparently in God, but opaquely rests or merges in some abstract universal [state, nation, etc.] or is in the dark about itself . . . every such existence, however outstanding its accomplishments, however much it can account for even the whole of existence . . . every such life is none the less despair. That is what the Old Church Fathers meant when they spoke of pagan virtues as splendid vices [Augustine, City of God 19, 25]. They meant that the heart of paganism was despair, that the pagan was not conscious of himself before God as spirit. (SD 77)
