9.5.2 Excessive Edge Loops

An edge loop is a group of edges that encircles your object to make a continuous ring of edges (Fig. 9.31). These are essential for joint structures in characters and other things that must flex during animation. They add many new faces to a model because they affect the entire circumference of the part they are added to, so they should be used sparingly and only with a good reason. If you don’t need them for animation, it is worth checking to see if some of the new faces created by this tool can be collapsed.
