Chapter Twelve

Alex wasn’t sure how she’d ended up there. She sat at the back of the hall, doing her best to merge into her surroundings and not get drawn into anything. She was just there to watch, and it was a lot easier to get a clear view from the outside.

The truth was, it was because of Rebecca. Given she’d had to deal with their parents at the weekend, Alex figured she had even more making up to do. If Rebecca had brought Phoebe to the second audition herself, it would’ve meant going over the end of her shift again. That wasn’t fair on her—she was doing enough for Phoebe. Possibly too much. Although Alex had come to trust her in some ways, and like her in more, she still didn’t want Phoebe getting too dependent on her. That was how they got you, and you ended up stuck in those places. Rebecca was trying to help and did seem to actually care, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t doing any damage. Some folks said it’s the intention that mattered, but Alex knew that was BS. You didn’t have to mean harm to do harm.

So she’d found herself arguing to do something she didn’t want to. Rebecca had given in quickly enough, but more because there was no good reason why Alex shouldn’t take over than because she was happy about it.

There was an unspoken reason Alex wanted to bring Phoebe—this was her chance to check the drama group out and see what she was getting into. They were very different from her old crew, at least at first glance. Phoebe was the only person there with a visible disability. It made Alex uneasy, with the whiff of tokenism. Could she be a proper part of it, or was she just there to tick a diversity box? She folded her arms and sank lower in her seat. She would see.

The director had greeted Phoebe like an old friend he hadn’t seen in years and was overly delighted to see. It probably wasn’t about her sister—he had the classic flamboyant theatre-gay vibe. Not that she was complaining. It was a definite plus compared to the other common option of creepy, old cishet guy. At least she wouldn’t have to worry about him treating Phoebe badly in that respect.

“Okay, listen up, everyone. We’re going to be trying you out in the particular roles that I hope you’ve been practising.”

He gave a dramatic pause, at which there was a chorus of confirmation. So it hadn’t just been Phoebe who’d been given the chance to rehearse beforehand.

“We’re going to do something a little different tonight, mix things up a bit by mixing you up.” The director added a mixing mime for emphasis.

From the look on the ensemble actors’ faces, they had no more idea than Alex what he meant. Phoebe seemed unbothered, though, and was watching him with that eager glint in her eye. It was good to see she’d got her spark back in time for the audition.
