Isabelle,

My sister received a letter from Becky informing her that you’ll be staying in the country for a while longer. Need I warn you again? You know better than to go prodding a wild beast. Return to London as soon as you can, I implore you. Lucifer is becoming even more volatile. Another one of his boys was caught pickpocketing and has been sentenced to hard labor. You’ll need to call in a favor with that judge you’re friends with. Have a care, I’ve told you before Lucifer is not a man to cross.

Your friend,

Sally D.

Francis read the missive in some confusion. One question nagged at him: who was Lucifer?

He heard footsteps coming toward the study. He quickly put the letter back and rounded the desk. Isabelle walked in and Francis felt like the sun had brightened the room. Her cheeks were flushed from riding, her eyes twinkled, and tendrils of hair escaped her hairdo to frame her lovely face. He caught his breath and lust shot straight to his groin.

“Francis, how nice of you to call,” she said, closing the distance between them and taking his hand in hers. “I am sorry I wasn’t here to greet you.”

He shook her hand, feeling little jolts of sensation running up his arm. Damnation, he had forgotten what it was like being so close to her. He stood mutely and watched as she took off her jaunty blue hat and gloves. Her riding habit was a deep shade of blue that complimented her eyes nicely, and while the neckline was modest by Isabelle’s standards, it was much lower than what was considered fashionable.

“Surveying your property?” he asked, focusing on keeping his eyes off her bosom.

Isabelle smiled. “Yes, as a matter of fact I was.”

She took the seat behind the desk and put some of the papers into a drawer before looking back at him. He sat down across from her, watching her movements.

“Is this a social call, or is there another reason for your visit today?”

“What makes you say that?”

Isabelle shrugged. “You haven’t been to see me these past three days, I thought perhaps our last conversation had made you uncomfortable.”

“Not at all! I’ve merely been preoccupied with estate affairs.”

It wasn’t entirely a lie; he had been busy with his steward going over the books and discussing repairs needed to be done to tenants’ homes. Frankly though, he could’ve spared time on any of those days to greet his new neighbor. Their last conversation didn’t exactly make him uncomfortable in the way she probably assumed; it made him want her more if that were possible.

She leaned forward on the desk, one hand propping up her chin as she studied him. “And now I have you all to myself.”

His blood heated at her suggestive words. He realized he was very close to losing control around her. That vulnerable side of her he’d glimpsed when her seductive mask had slipped fascinated him. By Jove, he wanted to see it again.

He shifted in his seat and worked to keep his face impassive.
