CHAPTER 9

“Hold on to your butts. This could be a wild ride,” Faith whispered as we walked along a slippery path fit for a snail.

“I prefer to hold yours,” Greyson countered in a husky tone. The warlock was walking behind Faith and admiring her backside a little too closely.

We ventured behind the curtain of the waterfall, stepping into a hidden realm where nature’s secrets were laid bare. The air was cool and refreshing, carrying the scent of damp earth and moss. Drops of water clung to the wall behind us. They shimmered like scattered gemstones in the dim light. Our footsteps echoed softly as we navigated a path that was as slippery as an ice rink after a hockey game.

As we explored deeper, the sound of rushing water surrounded us like a comforting embrace. The cavern opened up, revealing a pool at the base of the waterfall. The water’s surface rippled and danced in the ambient light, and the mist from the cascading water tickled our skin.

In the midst of our exploration, my footing slipped on the slick surface. My heart raced for a split second as I teetered dangerously close to a less-than-graceful plunge into the rocky water below. But before embarrassment could wash over me, Hunter’s strong arm shot out, steadying me with the kind of precision that only comes from being an alpha shifter. I wished I could say I caught myself after the countless supernatural scrapes we’d been through, but that wasn’t a skill I’d developed.

“Careful there,” Hunter teased, a playful grin on his face. “I’m all for wet T-shirt contests, but I don’t want to jump in after you.”

I playfully rolled my eyes, chuckling. “Oh, but what a heroic tale that would make. And you’d better not want to see other women in see-through tops.” I couldn’t help the jealousy that burst out of me. Hunter was mine, and I wasn’t about to share him.

Nishi and Faith exchanged amused glances, with Nishi adding, “I can already see the headlines: ‘Local Witch Rescued by Heroic Alpha Amidst Waterfall Adventure.’”

“Hunter wouldn’t survive to be part of that story. Eve would blast him out of the air for daring to mention other women,” Faith added. “Hell hath no fury like a witch scorned.”

Hunter growled at my friends. “Eve knows I only have eyes for her.”

Without responding, I allowed his assurance to warm me. I did know he loved me. For the first time in my life, I had no doubts about the man I was with. Setting those thoughts aside, we continued exploring, taking in the magic of the hidden cavern behind the waterfall. I marveled at the unexpected discovery, my eyes taking in the scene before us.

“Ah, the classic hidden cave behind the waterfall,” Nishi quipped with a smirk. “Next thing you know, we’ll find buried treasure and a pirate’s ghost.”

I chuckled, clearly sharing her amusement. “Wouldn’t that be a twist?”

The cavern stretched out before us, revealing ancient, crude temple ruins carved into the stone. The walls bore intricate markings, reminiscent of a time long past.
