CHAPTER 21

Five minutes later, they climbed out of the taxi and walked up to Ezekiel’s front door.

Elsa-May knocked on it, just to be sure no one was inside, before grabbing her handkerchief out of her bag and opening the front door. They entered the living room. Then they walked into the kitchen and noticed the dishes from the viewing the previous day were on the sink, sitting in the dish rack. Elsa-May looked at the kitchen table. The documents were now stacked in one neat pile. She started going through them one by one, but they were the same documents she had seen previously.

“I’d say Rita and Vera might’ve been here tidying up.”

“Ettie, check the trash can. There may be more paperwork in there.”

Ettie opened the trash can. “It’s empty. Someone has come in and cleaned everything. They’ve taken the trash outside.”

“Of course. Rita cleaned up after the viewing. Could you imagine Jonah bothering to do it? He just wants to claim his inheritance and go back to wherever he came from.”

“Let’s check the bedroom.”

They made their way through Ezekiel’s house, into his bedroom.

His bedroom was small. He had a decent sized bed in the middle with two nightstands, one at either side, and two fat pillows that were stacked on the same side. An old wooden wardrobe stood against the opposite wall.

“You check the wardrobe, I’ll look over here.” Elsa-May made her way over to his nightstand while Ettie looked inside his wardrobe. Elsa-May pulled open the drawer. Reading glasses, pens, handkerchiefs, scraps of paper. She picked up the papers and started reading the top one. “Oh, my.” She covered her mouth.

“What is it?” Ettie peeped her head around the wardrobe door.

“Ezekiel has written about Rita. It says he had to break up with her because he was afraid for her life. It says, ‘I wish I didn’t see what I saw. Rita is the love of my life and I don’t...’ The rest of it is torn off. We need to find the rest of it.”

“Ohh, what does that mean?”

Elsa-May gave Ettie a dirty look. “How am I supposed to know what he means beyond what it says?”

“Does it say anything else?” Ettie asked.

“No. It’s just a scrap torn off something else. Why didn’t the police find this when they looked through the house? Maybe he writes his thoughts down like you do.”

Suddenly, they heard a vehicle driving down the driveway. They looked out the window and saw a gray pickup truck driving to the house.

“Quick, Ettie. Someone’s here. We’ll have to climb out one of the back windows again. I knew this would happen. Go!”

Elsa-May hurried after Ettie. They used the back door once they saw the truck didn’t come all the way around the side. Then they headed for the barn. Once inside, they tried to look out the window, but it was too dirty to get a good view. They saw the truck and as soon as the door opened, the rain poured down.

“I told you something bad would happen if we came here,” Elsa-May hissed.
