Chief Wilson, Sergeant Tucker, Will, Kyle, and Agent Alexander all stood in a half circle, staring at Johnny Bales' lifeless and bloodstained body on the bed. They were exhausted, with weary five o'clock shadow faces and droopy dark-circled eyes that gave them the appearance of defeat. The on-duty doctor examined the bloody scene with excitement. He was happy the chief of police had called on him to assess the scene before the medical examiner arrived. He was too young looking to be a doctor, too fresh faced and put together. Kyle was certain the young doctor's fuel was Red Bull and ego. He looked like the perfect Boy Scout.
"With all the wounds appearing to be on the left side of his neck and with the blood on his right hand," the young doctor said, "I believe Mr. Bales took the IV needle and stabbed himself in the throat over and over until he lost consciousness. He just happened to lose consciousness with the needle still in his neck."
"Thank you, doctor," Chief Wilson said. "We'll advise the coroner of your observations as soon as she gets here."
He nodded with a smile and exited the room.
Chief Wilson walked over toward the bloodied bed and leaned against the wall, rubbing his eyes. "Do we have any idea who the girl is?"
"No," Will replied, folding his arms across his chest. "Her purse was empty. She was using it for the sole purpose of hiding the gun. She had no I.D. on her."
"Theories?" Chief Wilson asked with a wide yawn.
"She's either a fan or a loved one of one of the victims, hell-bent on revenge," Will replied.
"She could've been Bales' girlfriend," Kyle said. "Maybe they had a plan to break him out."
"Revenge makes more sense to me," Sergeant Tucker said as he leaned against the wall, folding his arms across his chest.
"Yeah," the chief said. "Me too."
"So that's it? Revenge?" Agent Alexander asked with a hint of sarcasm. There was doubt in his voice and the others sensed it.
"Well, if you have another theory, Agent Alexander," the chief said angrily, "feel free to enlighten us with it."
Alexander shrugged without speaking.
"I can't believe we have to drag Judy away from the autopsies to work on this," the chief said with a sigh.
"The press is going to be all over you," Alexander said with frustration in his voice. Will noticed how different Alexander looked in jeans and sweatshirt than he did in his suit. He looked almost human.
"I don't give a shit about that," Chief Wilson replied with a glare. "My boys are all safe and that's all that matters to me."
"Yeah, Bales did us a favor by killing himself," the sergeant said with a yawn, walking over to the bed for a closer look. "Saved us all a lot of headaches and saved the city a whole lot of money."
"None of you find it strange that when the chief spoke to him earlier, he said that he would never commit suicide?" Alexander reminded them. "He said it was a sin.
