Mike is not alone in Jakarta, otherwise known as the balcony of a strange 12th floor apartment where a party is in full swing. He is leaning on the balcony rail, and Kaela is leaning on him, face-to-face, pelvis-to-pelvis. He whispers something in her ear, and she throws her head back in laughter, waves of her lush honey blonde hair flying in the air. Like some chick in a Pantene TV ad whose hair quality you can never seem to achieve despite religious shampooing and conditioning and relaxing and waxing and hot-oiling. Remind yourself to make a hair appointment, then blink hard to bring yourself back to the matter at hand: Your fiancé is kissing his âbest friendâ. Itâs all too cliché that you canât believe itâs actually happening â to you.
Kaelaâs tight white mini-dress is spectacularly tiny â it might get approving snaps from Rupaul, but it would spectacularly fail your motherâs dress code â emphasizing the length of her bronzed legs. She coyly takes a sip of wine, and offers the glass to him. He takes a sip from the glass without taking his eyes off her, and they stay locked in each otherâs gaze until Morticia Adams interrupts. All three of them burst out laughing over something you cannot hear, and you press your hand against the cold glass door, as if doing so might allow you to hear their conversation. Or might make them disappear.
Blink.
Blink again.
Close your eyes this time; take a few seconds; open them. Mike and Kaela, arms entwined, and Morticia are still there.
When the Dalai Lama appears beside you, the music returns to your ears and the thumping falls into a cadence with your heartbeat. Itâs suddenly very loud, louder than it was when you first stepped in. The over-six-foot tall Lama yells, âHey, you need help opening that door?â
Turn to him with blank eyes behind your dark glasses. Try to say, âI donât want to open this doorâ but your throat is so dry you canât speak.
He smirks, says, âIâll do itâ and slides the door open just as you try to stop him with, âNooo!!!!!â
Feel the world freeze; then hear a camera click and a flash go off. Morticia Adams has just snapped a picture of you, and says, âSnaps to you, Miss Golightly! Great pearls!â The look of surprise in his eyes tells you something has just registered â the fact that he doesnât know you at all. âOh, sorry, I thought you were someone else.â
When in doubt â or in pain â run. Donât look back even when you hear voices rise above the music calling out your name. âGrace!â someone yells, and as you lunge through the crowd you can tell itâs Mike. âGrace!â someone else calls out, this time itâs Han. And then âGrace!â another womanâs voice calls out and you are sure, even if you have never heard her voice before, that it is Kaela.
Rush out of the door, down the hallway, and into the elevator.
