The Bay Street Pier (aka Long Wharf Village Pier) is an extension of Bay Street itself. It extends out about a hundred yards into Sag Harbor Bay, and it’s a favorite mooring spot for oceangoing super-yachts. During the summer season, crowds of tourists ogle the gigantic floating palaces of billionaires like Mark Cuban, Paul Allen, Roman Abramovich, and Larry Ellison, there to join in the posh social life of The Hamptons.

Since it was pre-season, there were only four boats moored on the wharf. Jericho drove onto the pier and passed one 200-foot-long, blindingly white vessel, displaying its name, Qamar ud-Din, and its home port, Dubai — UAE, on the yacht’s stern.

He parked when he saw the “Margarita.” Underneath the name he read “Club Yates y Pesca — Ciudad de Panamá Pá.”

The harbormaster, Jason Helmsdale, was waiting for him at the boat’s gangplank.

“Hey, Jericho.”

“Hey,” the detective said, shaking Jason’s hand. Jericho hadn’t seen the fifty-ish harbormaster in about a year.

“I dig the new facial hair,” Jericho said.

“Yep,” he said. “It’s a British Navy beard. That’s why it comes to a point at the bottom.”

“Very becoming.”

“Let’s go on board.”

The moment he entered the yacht, Jericho was impressed by its luxurious appointments. All surfaces were imported granite, and the bright work and decking were of burnished teak. Anything made of metal was also polished to a fare-thee-well.

“She’s a Hatteras 100,” Jason said. “Let’s go up to the aft deck master suite.”

They climbed an on-board stairway and emerged into the owner’s cabin. It was well-lit by the panoramic windows and skylights. Luxuriously furnished, everything matched everything else, a sign that an interior designer had been given free rein with the cabin. But, there were signs of a struggle. Several chairs were upended, a 60-inch TV screen had been cracked, and the desk was in disarray.

Jericho immediately noticed that a computer was missing from the desk, evidenced by a detached mouse, a mouse pad on the floor, and a modem and router that had been disconnected.

“Do you know the name of the owner?” Jericho asked.

“He introduced himself as Mike Mendez.”

“The boat’s registered in Panama, correct?”

“Yes,” Jason said. “It’s a corporate ownership — Superior Endeavor Properties Limited.”

Jericho thought for a moment. “Y’know, I’m investigating a murder,” he said. “Did you know we found a headless body out at the Cedar Point lighthouse?”

“No!” Jason said, looking shocked. “Headless?”

“We found the guy this morning,” Jericho said. “It seems to be a gang-related killing. The victim was a big-wig in the Sinaloa drug cartel. This is probably his boat, and he was living on it.”

“And he was killed in this cabin?”

“Maybe,” Jericho said. “More likely he was taken off the boat, killed elsewhere, and then put on display out at the lighthouse.”

“Jesus.”

“If I’m right, his name isn’t Mike. It’s Juan-Carlos Aguayo. And the company that owns this boat…what’s the name again?”

“Superior Endeavor Properties.”

“Probably a Mexican shell corporation. They all have these meaningless names,” Jericho said. “The killers were a rival gang, so they grabbed the computer, knowing it had tons of info on the Sinaloa operation.
