“Thank you so much for finishing up the washing up,” Dorothea kisses my cheek. “Why don’t you stay the night, dear? I’m sure Samantha has some pj’s you can borrow. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with either of you driving this late.”

It would save me disturbing my parents when I get home. I didn’t even realise it was past midnight until just now. “Only if that’s okay with you.”

“Of course it is!”

Before she and Thomas turn in for the night, they linger in the kitchen for a while. Dorothea’s smile doesn’t fade completely, but it does tune down for the first time since I arrived. “Now, I know that you are both adults,” she said, sounding like my own mother when she wants to lecture Tamara or I for not doing the chores. “I only ask that you be safe and use protection.”

“Mom!” Caleb stiffens, the anger returning from the dinner table.

She raises her hands in surrender, like her statement wasn’t the most embarrassing thing to happen.

Even Thomas has pinched the bridge of his nose, seemingly wondering what his wife was thinking.

“I’m only saying!” Dorothea voiced. “I still have little babies of my own, and while I do want grandchildren, just not anytime soon. And I - ”

“All right,” Thomas thankfully jumps in by wrapping an arm around his wife’s waist and drags her out of the kitchen. Practically pushing her shoulders as she vocally protests. “Goodnight.”

“Night,” I somehow manage to find words through my awkwardness. The last thing I want his parents to think is that Caleb and I are having sex, and under their roof too. Maybe we will one day, but not on the first night I formally meet them as Caleb’s girlfriend! It took a lot to not scream out: I’m a virgin!

Yet, I can’t imaging the awkwardness lifting if I did declare that.

Caleb and I clean up the kitchen in silence for a while. Neither of us know how to address what had happened, both at the dinner table and here.

Luckily, there isn’t too much to do. It’s mostly washing and drying.

Once I wipe down the last surface, and Caleb puts away the final plate we exhale a tired sigh at the same time. “I’m so sorry,” he finally says, turning to me with the balls of his hands buried deep into his eyes. As though he is trying to burn out those embarrassing encounters from his memory.

“I wouldn’t blame you if you broke up with me,” Caleb groaned. “I sorta want to break up with myself right now.”

I can’t help but laugh as I wipe the sweat from my brow with my arm. “I’m afraid it will take more than that to scare me away.”

“About what your mom said just now…” I shuffle my feet. “I…I just want you to know that I’m…I’ve never…”

“I wasn’t going to ask you for anything like that,” he takes my face in his hands. “I won’t ever pressure you, or anything.”

His answer causes my heart to sink like a ship, “Have you done it before?”

“Yeah,” at least he’s honest.
