Felix had reacted calmly after I told him who it was. He’d held me as I cried all while he made breakfast for all three of us, holding me close to him. He never once let go, somehow managing to maneuver around the kitchen with me somewhat in his way.

And after we ate breakfast, we sat in the playroom he had set up for Faith. A cartoon was playing on TV that kept Faith’s attention when she was distracted by all of her toys, and Felix held me on the couch. Even long after my tears had dried and my body had relaxed, he still never let go.

Was it possible that great men really existed?

Because Felix? I never knew men like him truly existed. I thought they were men in fairy tales and romance novels.

Felix rubbed his nose along the column of my throat. A moan slipped past my lips before I could stop it, a shudder racing through my body.

“When I mark you, sweet girl, I’m going to mark you right here,” he rumbled, pressing a kiss to the spot.

I snapped my eyes open in alarm. “A mark?” I choked out.

Felix nodded. “When we mate—have sex,” he further explained at my confused look, “I’ll bite you right here in the curve of your neck,” his finger traced the area, “and you’ll forever wear a mark that symbolizes you as not only my mate, but the Luna of my pack.”

“Can you explain to me the dynamics of your . . . pack?” I asked him.

He brushed his hand down my back. “We’re small—just five of us. There aren’t many wolf shifters left on Earth anymore, and mates are even harder to come by for our kind.” He looked down at me. “Honestly, I agreed to a marriage of convenience because I need to continue our bloodline.” He smiled. It warmed my heart. “I got lucky that my bride-to-be also happened to be my mate.”

He looked over to check on Faith who had suddenly gone quiet, but she had her eyes focused on SpongeBob and Patrick. He looked back at me.

“It’s why I had such a strong reaction to your mother. I sensed she was a threat. A mate can easily tell when their other half is in some sort of distress or trouble without even being mated. It’s almost like a sixth sense.”

“So, earlier?” I questioned, referring to when I saw him and his other pack mates as wolves.

He nodded. “I was already shifting by the time you rushed back from the window and screamed my name. You were panicking. I could feel it.” He smiled at me. “I’m proud of how well you’re taking all of this.”

I shrugged, not commenting. Honestly, this felt a lot more normal than being raped and molested by your stepfather for years—day in and day out.

Felix growled. “Out of your head, sweet girl.” I snapped my eyes up to his in alarm. He brushed his lips to my forehead. “I could sense your distress.”

I looked at the clock on the wall, noting it was already time for Faith to have lunch.
