KEIRA OPENED her eyes and discovered that she was strapped to a cold, aluminum, operating table. Her hospital gown had been removed and she was still in her regular clothes. Oh God, the dream! Itâs really happening! Theyâre going to cut me open! She shook violently, trying to free herself from the restraints. How long have I been unconscious? The last thing I remember is those Paragon techs cutting us out from the foam and spraying sleeping gas in our faces. I donât feel any pain; so no operation yet. The room was dark except for the pools of light beneath the surgical lamps overhead.
Keira heard breathing beside her. To her right, Lumen was similarly immobilized, gown removed, strapped to a metal table beneath a surgical lamp. To her left were James and Paul. It was dark and quiet. They were the only ones in the operating theater. UBE was nowhere to be seen, but Keira could feel him nearby. Out of habit, she tried to feel where Tenzing was in her pocket. And then it came horribly back to her, Tenzing shrieking, the splattering blood, and the vile demon smirking. Keira couldnât hold back the tears. She gasped and moaned. Lumen stirred next to her.
âKeira? Are you okay? Are you injured?â Lumen asked quickly.
Keira didnât answer immediately. She was lost in the horror of the last moments of Tenzingâs life. Itâs so cruel, so unfair! He never hurt anyone. Itâs all my fault. She looked over at Lumen and replied to her. âOnly my heart.â
âI canât tell you how sorry I am,â Lumen said in a soothing voice. âTenzing was a great guy. Iâm really going to miss him.â
âI canât believe heâs gone. Why would that demon kill him?â
âTenzing had some kind of power over him, right?â Lumen asked.
âI guess he was still afraid of him,â Keira said and laughed a little sadly at this. âThat big creepy jerk was scared of a tiny rat.â
âOh my God, Asmodeus is so disgusting,â Lumen said quickly. âDid he have to stand there naked in front of us? Gross!â
âI donât want to think about it,â Keira said and then whispered. âCan you use your power at all?â
âI donât know. A little bit, but not a lot.â
Keira looked over at Lumenâs wrists; they were manacled with the power-reducing handcuffs. She shook her own arms and felt the cold grip of the cuffs.
âThese cuffs only deaden your power, they donât turn it off completely,â Lumen said, barely able to read Keiraâs thoughts. âSee if you can turn them into something else.â
âIâll try,â Keira said and closed her eyes. She felt the first tiny surge of energy move inside her, but it was instantly drained into the absorbing cuffs. Keira turned her head a little to the left and tried again. Nothing. Not a thing. âI canât do it.â Keira started to cry again.
âKeira, you need to concentrate. Youâve been through a lot. I know. Itâs distracting you. You are the only one who can get out of these cuffs.
