There was not much talking between us when we reached Michal’s office. Before I could even admire the wall of bookshelves and the grand oak carved desk placed in the middle of the room, Rhory was on me.

His mouth crashed into mine before the door clicked shut completely at our backs. The suddenness of it took my breath away, but I didn’t shy away from it. My back was shoved into the door, spine pressed into it with the weight of Rhory before me.

His hands were on my face, his fingers running through my beard and up my cheeks. His skin was warm, but I held back the urge to hold him in return. I feared it would shatter this illusion, if I dared move a muscle it would ruin this moment.

Noticing my lack of response, Rhory pulled back. He practically leaned on me, on his tiptoes, until he pulled away, wiping his mouth with the back of his sleeve.

“Perhaps I got the wrong end of the stick,” he said. Even in the dull glow of the silver moon beyond the room, I could still make out the embarrassment creeping over his face. My eyesight was far better than most, but it was my ability to hear the beating of his heart which transfixed me. It thundered wildly, skipping every time he caught my gaze.

“No, you certainly are not wrong.” I pushed from the door and closed the space between us in two strides. Rhory’s chin was smooth to the touch as I slipped my two fingers beneath it and lifted upwards until he was looking at me again. “I just thought we might have had a conversation first, although I am not going to pretend I’m disappointed we haven’t.”

“Who are you?” Rhory asked, the question knocking me off guard. “And how dare they keep you from me. The feasts Mother and Father put on would have been more bearable if you had joined them.”

“So, you are telling me you don’t bring random men into dark rooms and kiss them?” I replied, still holding Rhory’s chin in my grasp. Excitement bubbled in my chest, making it harder for me to take in a decent breath. “Because I warn you, if you say you do, I will be painfully disappointed.”

“No,” Rhory whispered, blinking his doe-wide eyes. “Never.”

“Then I consider myself lucky,” I murmured. “And if it helps curve the embarrassment you feel… I want to know you.”

“Is that why you have always looked at me?” Rhory asked. “I’ve seen you do it for years.”

“Does my attention make you feel uncomfortable?” I replied.

Rhory shook his head. A curl of poppy-red hair fell over his eye. I took my fingers from his chin and brought them up to the pesky strand. As I brushed it back in place, I felt Rhory’s skin shiver beneath my touch. His heart pounded proudly in his chest, singing to me and my soul.

Knowing I had such a power over him almost brought me to my knees.

“You interest me,” I said, feeling the words rush out of me.
