The rest of the evening went off without incident. Temperance did her best to observe Miss Crauford’s pattern of behavior to determine which of her brothers her friend had developed an interest in, but saw nothing that gave cause for confirmation. Teresa danced with both Isaac and Lucas once apiece: Temperance, the same. Temperance attempted covert questioning of her brothers, but they too revealed nothing of interest more than a fondness for Miss Crauford and her brother. Teresa was neither flirtatious, nor fawning, over either of the Baggington sons that were in attendance. Temperance began to wonder if it might be Simon or Jesse, who were not present, who had caught her friend’s eye.

All of the notable families of Nettlefold, near and far, had made themselves present for the ball. The evening lasted much longer than expected and the musicians had to be asked to stay on for another hour or two to meet the pleasure of the crowd. The Viscount Mortel paid them well for the inconvenience and the players struck up their instruments once more with wide grins and heavy pockets.

The evening could not have been more of a success, the Baggingtons decided. The twins, who had spent the evening spinning about the floor with a near constant stream of partners, revealed that they even heard a remark that declared the family no longer worthy of the title “the baggage.” Temperance could not care less what the masses called her, but she was pleased to know, for her brother’s sake, that the reputation of the family was well on the way to redemption. In time, her brother would redeem the family seat and bring forth a new generation as the pride of the neighborhood. Of this she was sure.

She smiled thinking her little brother, Isaac had made this happen. It seemed strange to think of her little brother as a man, and stranger still that her new friend might hold a fondness for him. And what about herself? She was forced to consider. Did she hold a fondness for Teresa’s brother? Certainly the moments in Mr. Crauford arms were like heaven to her. She felt none of the fear that a man’s touch had so often generated.

She could not contain the smile that had taken over her features. Contrary to expectation, she had enjoyed herself the evening. Despite Lord Vardemere’s best efforts, he had not been able to bring ruination upon her evening, or her life. Instead she felt exhilarated, and alive as she never had in the past. Mr. Crauford was the cause of her joy. Could he be her means to restoring her? And yet, could she subject him to damaged goods? For that was the crux of the matter. Here at home surrounded by her loving family Temperance’s heart had begun to heal. Still, even if she found she could love a man after all she had seen, a gentleman as pure and good as Mr. Crauford deserved a bride who was the same. Not one such as herself.
