17. Jimmy

Mrs. Robbins answered on my second knock. “Henry! What a surprise. Come in!”

Her smile lit up her face, and I cleared my throat. “Ma’am, if you don’t mind, I’d rather talk out here.”

Emily stepped outside and closed the door. As I moved out of her way, the sun must have caught my badge.

“You’re a deputy now?”

My cheeks warmed. “Only for today. Well, maybe a couple of days. Sheriff Carson needed someone to help him, and I wanted something to do. That’s actually why I’m here. Where is Jimmy?”

Emily’s smile froze. “In the house. Why?”

I took a deep breath. “I need to speak with him.”

Mrs. Robbins opened the door and called for him. Then she asked, “What did he do?”

I shrugged. “Nothing too awful, but I’d still like to speak with him. If it’s all right, I’d like to talk to him without any interjections on your part.”

Mrs. Robbins nodded. “I’ll try.”

Jimmy came out and joined us. “Hi, Mr. Henry.”

I gave the boy a hug. “Have a seat, Jimmy. I need to talk to you.”

After Jimmy sat down, I crouched down in front of him, making eye contact with him. “Jimmy, do you know what this star means?”

Jimmy’s eyes widened. “You’re a sheriff.”

I smiled. “Kind of. It means the sheriff left me in charge. Now, you did something wrong today. Do you know what it was?”

Jimmy shook his head.

“Think really hard, Jimmy.” As I waited for his answer, I sensed Emily shift her position as she tried to keep quiet. It couldn’t be easy.

“I took some candy,” Jimmy whispered.

“That’s right. And you’ve done it more than once. Do you know why that’s wrong?”

“It weren’t mine and I didn’t pay for it.”

“What does God call that?”

Jimmy’s eyes flicked up to my face. “Sin?”

“Yes. Do you know what happens to little boys who steal things?”

Jimmy shrank back. “They get put in jail?”

I chuckled. “No, sir. In this case, I think you need to work off your debt. If your ma’s agreeable, I have a few things I can’t do at the sheriff’s office because of my arm.”

I looked up at Emily. Her smile had come back.

“I’d be obliged to you for helping Jimmy with this, Mr. Sullivan,” she said. “I certainly have no money to pay for it and that wouldn’t teach Jimmy anything either.”

I nodded and tipped my hat as I stood up. “Thank you, ma’am. I’ll have him at the office until late afternoon and drop him off on my way home.”

Her smile brightened. “I’ll bring the two of you some lunch. Unless you already had plans.”

I cleared my throat. “Thank you, Emily. I hadn’t thought of lunch. I’d love to eat some if you’re truly willing to share.”

She chewed her lower lip. “It isn’t much, but it’s filling.”

“Thank you. And you’d be welcome to join us if you’d like.”

Emily nodded and glided closer to her son. “When you get back, Jimmy, I will have to punish you for both disobeying and stealing. Both are against God’s law, too, remember. You listen to Mr.
