Chapter Seven

THE PURPLE SILK slithered sensuously against her bare flesh, and Joanna stood without moving as Deven wound the sari round her. It was spangled with sequins and she admired her glittering self in the mirror. She was preparing for an important event in the pagan calendar, due to take place that evening, attempting to transform her mind into a calm, contemplative pool.

Deven appeared in the mirror behind her, a distracting presence. His brown fingers adjusted a fold of semi-transparent material over one shoulder. Beneath it she wore nothing but a brief, gold lamé bodice with short sleeves. Her thonged sandals were gold, so were her pendant earrings and the wide bracelets that banded her upper arms.

Her hair was still thick, and she hennaed it a vibrant auburn and added to the length with extensions. She wore it loose, though her costume was from India where traditionally a woman of her maturity and station would have parted it in the middle, drawn it back into a bun and modestly hidden it under a veil. Joanna was a woman of eclectic taste, taking aspects of differing cultures and using them to suit herself, ignoring conventions. Non-judgemental and open-minded, she had spent her life questing for answers to the meaning of existence, the universe and the mystery of creation.

The resurgence of interest in these fundamental issues had reached a peak in the 1960s and had never really gone away, recently invigorated by the dawning of the new millennium. Fell Tor was more popular than ever, a stream of disciples clamouring for knowledge. It had become a centre for crystal healing, astrology, tarot and runic readings, music and dance, regression, retreats and environmental workshops. Joanna gave students the opportunity to develop their spirituality, and encouraged the uninhibited exploration of the senses as a road to greater understanding.

‘It’s a here today, gone tomorrow world out there,’ Deven remarked, his hands gentle as a woman’s as he placed a wreath of stargazer lilies on Joanna’s head. ‘We can offer self-awareness.’

‘I wish my daughter would accept our teachings,’ Joanna answered with a sigh. The strong smell of the flowers was intoxicating, as was his touch, and she sank to her knees before him and unlooped the tiny ball buttons that held the front of his djellabah together.

‘Tonight may be an awakening for her,’ he said, his head up, staring into the middle distance as if lost in realms of his own.

‘I pray so,’ she whispered, admiring his muscular legs, and the splendid cock that reared towards her. It was a column of smooth, dark flesh interwoven with blue veins, the bulbous end enticing, already pearled by a single drop of pre-come.

She prayed for something else too. Whatever gods are out there, please don’t let Deven be the one who initiates Cheryl into Fell Tor’s ways of love.
