Andrew worked his way around the DAYS group. The closer it got to my turn, the clammier my palms became. There was so much I wanted to talk about, which was a first, but so much I couldn’t say.

Andrew grinned. The moment had come. “Lara, how was your week?”

I stretched the knitted sleeves of my jumper over my hands. “Fine. Same old.” I answered on autopilot before adding, “Although, it was kind of crazy too.”

“Crazy good, or crazy bad?” He prodded.

“Good. Both. No, good. Mostly.” I looked around at a sea of confusion. “Okay, so you know I’m doing the sponsored dates?” The group nodded. “Well, the crazy thing is this week, I actually got asked out on a real date.”

“How did it go?” Jenny piped up, radiating excitement.

“There were a few hiccups, but it was good. And I’m hopefully seeing him again tomorrow.”

“Well done, Lara.” Andrew beamed. “I think you can tell how happy we all are for you.” He lifted his arms out to indicate the room of smiling faces.

Yeah. I did it. I went on a date that wasn’t a complete disaster.

Mic drop.

Jenny waved me over as I was leaving, insisting that I give her all the details.

“Well, of course, you did it, sweetheart!” she said, setting down her tea to cwtch me. “You’re a competent businesswoman who meets and deals with people every day. I never had any doubts.”

“I wish I had your confidence.”

She adjusted the clip in her hair. “When people say they’re scared of flying, most of the time, what is it that they’re really afraid of?” Jenny’s random questions usually meant she was getting at something.

I took a second to think about it. “I suppose… they’re more afraid of crashing. And dying.”

“So why are you afraid of dating?”

I knew the answer, but I couldn’t bring myself to say it.
