CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The night air was thick with the scent of exhaust fumes and city grime as Connor pulled the car up outside Jade's apartment building. The dimly lit street cast eerie shadows, mirroring the dark uncertainty that hung over them. Jade stared out the window, her eyes tracing the familiar shapes of the brick buildings, but her mind was elsewhere. Today had been a whirlwind of events, a chaotic rollercoaster ride that left her feeling both drained and on edge.

"Guess we're back at square one," Jade muttered, breaking the heavy silence in the car.

"Seems so," Connor replied tersely, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. "But Wiggle's alibi checked out, so we have to keep looking."

Jade nodded, biting her lip as she thought about John Wiggle. Despite his creepy demeanor and obsession with Olivia, it seemed highly unlikely he could be the murderer. Yet, she couldn't shake the nagging feeling that there was something more to him - something they'd missed.

"What happens now?" Jade asked as she looked over at him, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I'll pick you up tomorrow morning at seven sharp. Until then, get some rest," he replied, his eyes never leaving the parking lot in front of them. "You've had a long day."

"Thanks," she murmured, opening the car door and stepping out onto the dimly lit parking lot. "Night, Higgins."

Connor was quiet for a moment longer. "Night."

As Jade closed the door behind her, she thought to herself that sleep was unlikely to come easily tonight.

Shutting the door to her apartment, Jade sighed and flipped on the lights. It felt like she'd lived nine lifetimes since Alicia and Connor had showed up at her apartment earlier today, conscripting her to help on this crime.

With her, she had the laptop Connor had given her and some files she'd been allowed to take home. She threw some of the files down on the coffee table, before she went into the kitchen to grab a frozen pizza and put it in the oven.

As the pizza warmed, she spread out the photos of the crime scenes on her coffee table. She paced around her living room, studying the photographs that covered every inch of the coffee table. Each victim stared back at her, their lifeless eyes haunting her thoughts.

Once the pizza was ready, Jade took it out of the oven, sliced it up, and grabbed a piece. Jade returned to the crime scene photos, taking small bites as she examined each one, grateful to finally have some carbs and protein after such an exhausting day. As she observed the photos, she noted the similarities between Olivia and Lauren – both young, beautiful, and successful women whose lives had been cut tragically short.

Jade scribbled notes on a legal pad, jotting down theories about the killer's possible motive and modus operandi. It was clear they were dealing with a stalker, but what type? Was this someone obsessed with their victims, driven by a twisted sense of love? Like John Wiggle? Or was
