Chapter 9

Crystal

“Tell me everything. I need every detail.”

Jenn pumped her arms furiously as she and Crystal walked down the sidewalk in her sprawling neighborhood. It was a great place to take walks, but there weren’t a lot of families with young kids. And no one handed out candy on Halloween, which was why Tilly usually found a friend or a cousin to go with in some other neighborhood.

It had been a chilly start to the day but had warmed up nicely for a quick, late morning power walk around the block while Tilly watched cartoons with Stout.

“When’s Danny’s band due back from this tour again?” Crystal asked. “I’m excited for you to have your husband back, so you can be distracted from… whatever this is that you’re doing.”

“I’m simply being your caring big sister.”

“You mean curious annoying sister.”

“I don’t care what you call it as long as you dish the details.”

Crystal needed to get the events of last night out of her head and was glad to have a willing ear, so she was just giving Jenn a hard time. She relayed the story of how they got to the party and found Erin there while she tried to keep up with Jenn, pushing the dog stroller with Stout in front of her.

“Wait, wait, wait… you ran into her again? And I’m really sorry about yesterday. I had no idea that’s who Aiden’s sister was!”

“I know, and it was fine.”

“Did you talk to her last night?”

“I did,” Crystal said. “It was… good.”

“Good how?”

“Good like… easy. Like it used to be. Maybe even more.”

“So you’re saying you didn’t talk about anything real then, right?”

“No, that’s not it,” Crystal said. “We didn’t talk about the breakup, but we talked about our lives now. She’s actually considering moving here.”

“To Baton Rouge? Seriously?”

“She might take a job at the restaurant where Liv works. That’s why she was there last night. It was the owner’s party.”

“And how do you feel about that?”

“Honestly? I don’t know,” Crystal said. “I would have known for sure two days ago. Then maybe not so much yesterday. And now… after she almost kissed me…”

“Hold up.” Jenn stopped walking abruptly and held up her hands. “You can’t just gloss over that.”

Crystal pulled the stroller to a stop a couple of feet ahead. Stout let out a snort of displeasure. “I’m not.”

The last thing she was doing was glossing over the fact that she almost kissed her ex last night. It was the only thing she’d been able to think about.

“You said almost. So she pulled the emergency escape hatch on the kiss?”

“No,” Crystal said with a groan. “I did.”

Jenn blinked at her for a bit, sizing up the situation. Then they both started walking again, a little more slowly now. They crossed the street and began walking up the other side of the road, back toward the house.

A few houses later, Jenn asked, “Why?”

“Because she’s considering moving here.”

“What does that have to do with anything? I mean, that’s even more reason to see if things could work again.
