The next time I awoke, Joy was gone, not only from the bed but the suite. I sat up and knuckled my eyes.

“Joy?”

A quick glance around showed me the room looked much the same as it had before I drifted off last night. Joy’s luggage lay open on a rack in front of the open closet. Her ballgown hung on a hanger inside. My shirt still lay draped over the foot of the bed. The only new detail to catch my eye was the folded piece of paper tented on Joy’s pillow. My name was handwritten on the outside. The note appeared thin and fragile, like a sheet of aged parchment, and looking at it made my skin crawl. I snatched it up. Inside, in a spidery hand, was inked a message that almost stopped my heart.
