The next day, I got showered and dressed in my slacks and blouse with a cute blazerâthe most unassuming of all the outfits Sebastian had bought for me. I put my hair back in a simple ponytail and didnât do anything out of the ordinary with my makeup. I had to go the university to do some paperwork that I couldnât do from home. Plus, there was an optional department meeting, and I figured it was in my best interest to go to everything I could.
When I got there, Janet, one of the Chaucer professors who rarely talked to me, came right up to me and said, âClaudia, did you lose weight or something? You look amazing.â
I said I hadnât, but it felt great to be noticed that way. Then it happened again. Paul, one of the literary criticism profs, was mid-conversation with another faculty member when they both suddenly stopped then turned and stared at me.
âWhat happened to you?â Paul asked.
He and I have had a number of good connections at the department pub nights at the faculty lounge but this was still pretty blatant considering we were colleagues, not friends.
âUm, what?â I was suddenly shy about my new attire.
âYou clean up nicely, Richards,â he said, punctuating his comment with his charming grin.
Was he flirting with me?
âUh, thanks.â
âDid you hear thereâs a new position opening up in the department?â
âNo.â But I sure loved being including in department gossip.
âYeah, Frank said they got funding for another faculty member but they havenât chosen yet. Theyâre probably going to keep it pretty quiet, but you should apply,â Paul said.
âWell, how do I apply if they are keeping it quiet? Wonât it be obvious I heard it through some gossip then?â
âJust figure it out, Richards,â he said. âEveryone wants to keep you around.â
He hadnât been so sweet to me before. Suzanne was right. Dressing the part was actually kind of a good idea. I was starting to understand how mousy people got overlooked because the old me would have quietly slipped into my little office and not made small talk.
