CHAPTER 11

I held my head high as we walked up to the door of the covenstead, refusing to acknowledge the number of my fellow witches that were flocking to the place. I tilted my head to look at Henriette. “Did you tell Lucinda I was coming to speak to her about permission to help the shifters?”

Henriette’s pale complexion turned redder than a ripe tomato. “Well, I had to make sure she was here to talk to. And I didn’t say it was just you. I told her that you and I were going to stop by. I didn’t place this all on you. I’m honestly curious to see this virus firsthand and how it’s affecting the shifters.”

I gaped at her. She was treating this like a curiosity in a museum of oddities. “This virus is serious business, Henriette. This isn’t fodder for the rumor mill in the coven. We all know Lucinda beat me and won Caton. I don’t give a shit what they say about me, but it isn’t right for them to spread the word about what’s happening to the shifters and you know that’s going to be the result of this meeting.”

“I know it’s fatal. Lucinda has had me researching a cure. She told me I would be the key to saving the Shrouded Nation from an insane god. I was hoping you’d share what you have with me,” Henriette admitted.

I clenched my jaw and fists to keep from punching a woman that was old enough to be my mother. I was raised to respect my elders. That was hard to do when they purposefully ignored what I’d accomplished and were working to undermine me. I didn’t think Henriette was doing it on purpose. It was clear that Lucinda hadn’t told her I had found a cure. Lucinda had probably informed the healer she was our only hope, so she could get her working and then claim the potion for herself.

“A little warning would have been nice.” I didn’t mean to snarl at Henriette, but it pissed me off. I would now face most of the coven based on the number of cars surrounding us and continuing to pull up. Like the working girl she was, Lucinda had been working a case against me for months. And it was working. I heard the rumors when customers came into the store. Thankfully, my reputation as a powerful potion maker kept me busier than I ever imagined in under a year on my own.

I had to roll my eyes at two witches that had been glued to Lucinda’s ass since high school. Nancy and Tanya were Lucinda’s personal cheerleaders. Sycophants were more like it. They copied everything she did, from the way she dressed to the style of her hair. There was little doubt in anyone’s mind what they were whispering about to each other as we approached the covenstead doors. The sympathetic look Henriette shot me screamed it.

I took a deep breath and kept my expression neutral. It would only fuel their belief in what Lucinda was saying about me.
