THE TICKING OF THE living room clock sounded thunderous in the silence that followed Scottlyn's announcement Saturday night.

"You did what?"

She crossed her arms and paced the length of Diana's living room, putting some space between her and her angry fiancé. "Why is this a big deal?"

Grant looked at her like she'd grown a second head. "Why is this a...?" He ran his hand through his hair. "Who are you and where is my level-headed girlfriend?"

Scottlyn narrowed her eyes at him.

He shook his head. "I can't believe we're even having this conversation."

"Neither can I," she said. "It's a hundred and fifty dollars, not a thousand."

"It's three hundred fifty, and we agreed on two hundred."

"Oh, we agreed all right." She put her hands on her hips and leaned forward. "After I practically had to pry the debit card out of your hands."

This time it was Grant's eyes that narrowed to slits. "That's not fair."

"And neither was the fact that Mercie trashed her shoes." Scottlyn did her best to calm her tone of voice. She held out her hands. "Grant, you should have seen the look on her face. It was so sad, like something inside her broke right along with the shoes. I don't know why they meant so much to her, but I had to replace them."

"I understand that you felt you had an obligation. What I don't understand is how you think it's OK to spend the additional money without talking to me first."

Scottlyn raised her eyebrows and tilted her head. "That's how it's going to be after we're married? I have to ask for permission to buy a pair of shoes?"

Grant's eyes closed, and he clasped both hands around the back of his neck. "You know better than that," he mumbled. He opened his eyes and pinned her with a stare. "It's a joint account set aside for a specific reason. We promised to discuss any withdrawals before they were made. We discussed two-hundred dollars. I agreed because I know this is important to you. You withdrew three-hundred-fifty. I'm not asking you to account for every dollar you spend, but I am asking for the same consideration I'd give you if the situation was reversed."

His reminders let the air out of her arguments. She accepted the truth. "You're right." Scottlyn moved toward him. She slipped her arms around his waist, and his eyes bored into hers as she looked up. "I messed up, and I'm sorry." Her forehead came to rest on his chest.

"I'm just..." Scottlyn sighed. "Part of me is afraid that she'll take off again, and I'm trying to do everything I can think of not to give her an excuse."

Grant's snort echoed in her ears as his arms tightened around her. "I don't think that's a problem."

Scottlyn leaned back and met his eyes again. "What do you mean?" She frowned when his expression tightened.

"Scottie, can we be honest with each other?"

She nodded.

He took a deep breath. "Don't you think her return to Sabor is just a little too convenient?"

"No.
