The bed was soft, the pillow was plump, the sheets were pristine white and had a fresh, clean smell. Chris hadn’t been in a bed like this for a long, long time. And the fact that he’d been able to have a real hot shower, soap, and plush towels to dry himself with made the experience of being in a real bed even more pleasurable. It was almost worth having been tied up for eight hours.

He fell immediately into a deep, dreamless sleep. When he woke up, he felt completely refreshed and energized. But he didn’t jump out of bed. Instead, he just lay there and enjoyed the unfamiliar feeling of luxury.

He didn’t get to enjoy the experience for long. The door to his room swung open. He sat up and watched in dismay as two Andy clones marched in. He didn’t know which one was Eight, from yesterday, but he didn’t think it mattered. They both had the same cocky, smirking expressions.

“You better not be expecting breakfast in bed,” one of them said. “This isn’t a four-star hotel, you know.”

“Yeah, if you wanna eat, you gotta get up,” the other declared.

Chris was uncomfortably aware that under the sheets, he was completely naked. Normally, he wasn’t the modest type, but he didn’t particularly want to expose himself to these guys.

It didn’t look like he was going to have a choice. One of the Andys strode over and grabbed his arm, jerking him out of bed and onto the floor. “Ow!” Chris cried out involuntarily.

The boys howled with laughter and started mocking him. “ ‘Ooh, ow! That hurt! I’m gonna tell!’ ” And before Chris could get up, one of them stepped over his prone body. The clone lifted one booted foot, as if he was about to stomp Chris in the face.

Chris didn’t move. He knew what kind of strength these Andys had. This guy could probably crush him. And he could only lie there, helpless. He was scared out of his mind. It was awful to feel so completely vulnerable.

But rescue came in the form of Mr. B. Striding in, he declared, “Okay, boys, enough of that. That’s no way to treat our friend.”

The Andy moved off Chris, and Chris sat up. “I’m not your friend,” he muttered.

Still laughing, the Andys took off, and Mr. B put a pile of clothes on Chris’s bed. “These should fit you. Underwear, socks, jeans, T-shirt. Oh, and what size shoes do you wear?”

“Nine and a half,” Chris said. “But I don’t want any new shoes from you. I don’t want these clothes, either.”

Mr. B shrugged. “Then you’ll have to go around naked. I threw out your old stuff. Everything was torn and filthy. Dress or don’t dress, but if you want to eat, breakfast is on the top floor.” With that, he left the room.

Chris couldn’t exactly see himself roaming the building without clothes on. So he put on the new jeans, and everything else. And when he opened his door, he found a pair of brand-new size-nine-and-a-half Nikes waiting for him.
