Chapter Six

It had been over a week since Rae and I went on a date. The last time I was at her house was the morning she showed up with my bike and revealed to me another side of her personality. However, we still saw each other daily at the diner. She always showed up just after the breakfast rush and would sit at the counter on a stool, keeping me company as I worked. It was quite comforting just having her in the vicinity, knowing that she was just within arms reach, or around the corner, either watching me in contentment or bullshitting with the other servers.

Rae always had a calm authority about her whenever she was in public. She had a way of making everyone feel welcomed, involved and safe; of course, her dazzling smile and dangerous predator eyes had nothing to do with it. Sometimes I would catch myself staring at her from afar and would smile on the inside because I knew what laid under that steely control of hers. It made me feel good, like I owned a part of Rae for knowing her true self; the self that she wouldn’t dare expose to others.

I remember I was itching to get in with the club and I kept bringing the topic up with Rae, but she always skated around the question and would divert the conversation elsewhere. At the time, I wasn’t sure why she kept avoiding it, and it was pissing me off. I remember the day she finally caved and invited me to a club meeting as a spectator to listen in. It wasn’t easy to sway her, but I felt proud of myself for making the boss lady crack.

“Hey, babe,” I heard Rae’s voice from behind me as I was refilling the sugar dispensers. We were now using nicknames for one another; I was babe to her and I would sometimes call her that too, but my nickname for her was boss. She got a good chuckle out of that the first time I said it to her. I was actually being sarcastic and a brat when I said it because she was pissing me off again, but when she laughed at the nickname, it stuck.

I turned around and gave her a small smile which slowly crossed my entire face from the dreamy look Rae was giving me. She was staring at me with love in her eyes, and for a brief moment, I let myself enjoy that feeling, but I quickly squashed it when my senses came back to me, telling me that it was too soon to be falling in love. I cleared my throat, which pulled her from her dazed state. “Mornin’, boss,” I said. She smiled back and leaned forward on the counter, then gestured with her head for me to come closer to her. I gave her a sly smile and took one step closer. She gestured again, a little harder this time, I stepped closer again and cocked my eyebrow.
