CHAPTER 11 [TIM]

THE GANG’S ALL HERE—ALMOST

Pleskit didn’t tell me he had invited Jordan to come over to the embassy, so I was startled and not entirely happy when he showed up. But I didn’t say anything; I was willing to hold off until he started in on me. After he managed to go a full five minutes without saying anything rotten—which I think was an all-time record—I began to wonder if someone had convinced him he should act like a human being while he was at the embassy.

Or maybe Pleskit used some secret alien device to alter his personality and get him to behave decently. Who knows?

As for Jordan, he seemed really startled to meet Beebo. This surprised me, until I realized that even though the last time Beebo was here he had used his telekinetic powers to annoy Jordan, we had never told Jordan what was really happening.

I spent the first half hour trying to stay as far away from Jordan as I could without getting too close to Beebo. I found this confusing. I am basically a nice person and do not like to fight with people. So how did I end up with two enemies in the same room?

The person I did want to stand close to was Rafaella, but I was afraid that if I did, Jordan would have one more thing to tease me about.

“Some snacks, my little keekle-boongers?” sang Shhh-foop, sliding over to us. With her tentacles she was carrying a tray covered with glowing yellow blobs. “These are kloopenzoofers,” she sang proudly. “I made them just for you.”

“Thanks,” said Rafaella, sounding a bit nervous as she took one of the blobs off the tray.

The kloopenzoofers tasted pretty good, but made weird squeaking sounds when you bit down on them. When everyone had had a couple, Pleskit suggested we go to the lab for the demonstration of his interdimensional camera. I hoisted my backpack and followed the group, still uncertain how I felt about Jordan having been invited into the embassy, and half thinking I might just leave.
