I woke up in bed with Shadow curled up naked against my chest. Her heart was beating slowly, sending vibrations throughout her body. She started to stir, rubbing her hand against my chest as she lifted her head to yawn.

“Good morning,” I said, leaning in to kiss her. But in reality I had no idea what time it was—there was no window in the room, and my phone was on the floor. I felt like I’d been sleeping for a straight week.

“Good.. Morning, is it?” she said, kissing me back softly and rubbing her eyes. “How long were we asleep for?”

“No idea,” I said, getting out of bed. I found my phone on the floor in my pants, and pulled it out.

“Damn, we slept nearly a full day. It’s after two PM,” I said. But it didn’t come as much of a surprise that I was tired. It dawned on me that I had been through a lot since I last slept, so my body probably needed the rest.

“It is good to rest up before we approach Area 51,” said Shadow as she started getting dressed. “It would be unwise to rush in tired and unprepared.”

“I know…” I said. “I’m just worried about the other women I’m bonded to. You said he tortures aliens to force their adaptations. It feels kinda wrong to enjoy sex or waste any time at all until I can get them back.”

“Do not feel that way,” said Shadow, putting her hand on my chest and pressing herself against me. “You are doing everything you can to save them. And if it helps you feel better, I do not think they are being mistreated. When I left they were in holding cells, not the adaptation chambers.”

“Really? I mean, I know Sun already has one so it wouldn’t make sense to do anything to her. But I don’t think any of the others do.”

“Slade seeks to kill you. If he adapts women you are bonded with, you will gain their abilities and become formidable. It does not benefit him to adapt aliens that are not bonded with him,” said Shadow.

“You’re right,” I said.

“You definitely seemed to enjoy breaking my former bond,” said Shadow, grinning at me. I smiled back at her and grabbed her ass.

“I imagine it’s impossible to think an unhappy thought while inside you,” I said.

“I am glad,” said Shadow, leaning in to kiss me. “I enjoyed it, too. Just because someone needs your help does not mean you should stop living your life. If you allow yourself to be consumed with negativity, you will be no help to anyone. I have felt lately like I was falling into a dark place, but mating with you helped pull me out of it.”

“Well I’m happy to help whenever you need it,” I said.

“Anyway, I wonder when we started flying,” said Shadow.

“Huh? We’re flying?”

“Yes, you have my adaptation now. Do you not feel the vibrations running through the ship?”

“I feel them, but I didn’t realize it meant we were flying,” I said, noticing now that I was swaying slightly as I stood.
