“Bogdan,” I say warily.

Bogdan's suit is glossy black as usual, but there's no sign of the bright gleaming stars that appeared after he bonded with Pareena. His helmet fully covers his face, and a forest of spines protrude from his armor. He looks ready to fight.

I’m standing right up against the shimmering barrier of the brig that's keeping me prisoner. As Bogdan comes to face me, my own armor starts to respond to his warlike stance. The nanotech bulks up, adding protective mass to my legs and torso. My helmet extends to cover my skull and jaw, but I don’t allow it to shield my face.

“How was your honeymoon?” I ask in a bland tone.

“Terrible,” he growls. “Thanks to you.”

“So that’s why you’re in a bad mood.” I tap my helmet. “Oh, no, wait, I forgot who I was talking to. You’re always in a bad mood.”

Bodgan continues like I haven’t spoken. “Instead of a nice relaxing vacation with my Tribute, I ended up learning of your betrayal, and racing to hunt you down.”

Racing? I’m flattered. But instead of goading him further, I try to reason with him. “It couldn't be helped. My mate was potentially in danger.”

Bogdan scoffs. “A convenient excuse, but you and I both know you don't believe what the Vgotha have told us about the Jabol. The High Commander might believe your lies but I know the truth.” He points a finger at my face, close enough to the barrier to make it ripple in warning. “You would have acted against orders and gone to pick up your Tribute whether or not she was in danger.”

“It's true,” I say. Why deny it? I think that the High Commander and Bogdan have been duped by the Vgotha. Dawn has resentment against the Jabol, and the Vgotha’s story fed into that. But I also know that Bogdan now believes the Jabol to be our true enemies. “Would you not do the same for Pareena if she were in Jabol hands?”

“Do not speak her name!” Bogdan's roar reverberates around the brig.

So he's still touchy because I tried to seduce his Tribute. And I can't help twist the knife. “Perhaps that is why you didn't have a good honeymoon. Your Tribute senses that you do not truly care for her.” Red streaks ripple through Bogdan's armor, but I continue. I don’t have anything better to do, and my own anger and frustration have built and built and built while I’ve been waiting for whatever will happen next. Bogdan has always made a convenient outlet for such emotions, and I still do not think he deserves Pareena. “If you were truly worthy of her, you wouldn't have resisted bonding with her for so long.”

“Be silent,” he roars. His suit flashes red with anger, the color streaking through the deep black. “The only reason you're still standing is because the High Commander would not allow me to beam into your private quarters and challenge you directly. But now the High Commander isn't here.
