Alex and Kate 3

Secrets and Lies

Chapter24.

“I can’t believe how perfect it is.” Kate dropped into a weather-weary moss-clad iron chair on the patio.

Smiling, I followed her gaze, drinking in the scene unfolding in front of us like a water colour. Flush, rolling meadows of green velvet carpet stretched out before our eyes, disappearing into an azure summer sky, interspersed with rectangles of brown and yellow, like someone had rolled a patchwork quilt out over the hills; a shimmering haze of heat made them dance.

“It certainly is one hell of a back garden. ” I leaned across the table, covering Kate’s hand with mine. “We’re very lucky.”

Kate tore her eyes from the postcard-perfect view. “No, I’m lucky, Alexandra Hamilton,” Kate smiled, exhaling. “Lucky to have found you and all that you are; to be here with you, to live here, with you, my beautiful writer.”Feeling an increasingly familiar wave of guilt burn my insides, I returned Kate a quick smile. “Hey, it was your ex’s millions that helped us get this place, nothing lucky about that.” I handed Kate a glass of wine, my eyes to the paving stones below.

“Don’t be silly, it was my money. I helped him start the business, I earned it. Besides it is both our names on the mortgage, not just mine.” Kate smiled, adding, “He called me again yesterday.”

I felt my heart skip a beat, my mind racing back to the last conversation I had had with Jonathon Shaw. “What did he want?”

Kate shrugged, glancing at the scenery behind our new home. “Nothing really. I dunno, it’s a bit strange. He’s called a few times. Keeps asking me to see him.” She laughed, “He never contacted me that often when we were married!”

I chose my words carefully. “What if he wants you back?” I looked at her over the rim of my glass.

“What?” Another tinkle of laughter. “Are you serious?”

I nodded slowly, still looking at the ground. I could feel Kate’s eyes on me.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Alex. We’ve only just got divorced. And besides, he didn’t want to be married to me when we were, nor I him. Why would he want me now?”

“Because I have you,” I said slowly, risking a look in Kate’s direction.

Confusion crumpled Kate’s brow, beautiful chocolate eyes now pools of worry. “You are serious?” Kate’s voice was low, a hint of anger edging in.

I sighed. “I don’t know, Kate.” I waited a second before I asked, “And what if he does?”

The idyllic countryside calm was broken with the clink of a glass slammed hard on the iron table and the scrape of metal on stone as Kate left her seat. I closed my eyes and listened to her walk away, once again alone with my thoughts, and the afternoon birdsong.
