Vegetables are Part of a Balanced Diet

Instead of dining in his quarters again, Alexander had his steward set out dinner on the map table in the navigation. When Mina asked about the change in venue, he just shrugged his broad shoulders.

“I thought you might enjoy eating among the charts and maps and watching the sunset from the aft windows. The light is truly something in that room, and tonight it will be spectacular.”

Mina didn’t ask how he knew that. The sailors all seemed to have access to some kind of mystical knowledge she wasn’t yet privy to. They understood the airsea at a fundamental level, knew how the currents of aether flowed at any moment just by the way the leaves on the mast rippled. They could tell the time of day from the position of the sun and seemed to be able to taste rain or mist or cloud cover on the breeze itself. If Alexander said it was going to be a good sunset, it would be.

They ate dinner as the light turned the room golden around them. The fare was as sumptuous as the night before. For dessert, there were poached pears in sweet cream and a thick, rich ale accompanied the meal instead of wine.

Mina fingered the green stone hanging about her throat as she watched Alexander swallow the last mouthful of his beer. Curiosity about the jewel still burned in her heart, but after the events of the last two days, the mystery seemed less urgent somehow. Life aboard the Ephemerae wasn’t how she expected it would be, somehow more and less at the same time.

A vision of Breanna suddenly entered her mind. She thought of her blonde friend and roommate, and imagined her sick with worry, completely unaware of Mina's whereabouts. A feeling of guilt flashed through her heart. She thought of other friends, the girls at the Rose and Thorn, and Dame Schipol herself. None of them knew what happened after the madness of that night Bram died. Were they worrying about her, fretting over her fate, while Mina was off on a grand adventure?

Alexander’s voice brought her back to the present. The shadows had lengthened in the navigation room, the light of the single candle in the center of the table enhancing the gloom of the evening instead of beating it back.

Still, Mina found it beautiful. Clouds reflected cool blue light shot through with veins of pale pink indicated the sun had almost set.

“I don’t understand why Cook decided to add these raw cucumbers,” Alexander was saying. He held up one of the green vegetables, narrowing his eyes skeptically at the cucumber.

Mina shook free of her gloom and concentrated on the moment. There was nothing for it; she would get word to Breanna as soon as she could, and there was no sense in feeling guilty in the meantime.

Whether she liked it or not she was on an adventure, even if she hadn't chosen it. For now, Mina figured that she might as well make the most out of the experience.
