The rest of the day provided the most relaxing time I had ever experienced with a woman. I felt that between Martina and myself there was real understanding with no place for bullshit. I have to acknowledge that the key to this was Martina’s candour. I didn’t have to pretend with her, but largely because of that I began to feel genuine affection for her. She showed me round the beautiful house, walked with me in the garden and relaxed with me by the pool. She talked about her home, her marriage, and her views on life without any attempt at self-aggrandisement or false modesty. I simply listened, while slowly falling in love with her.

Martina told me that she had been born into a working, middle-class family in Milan forty-three years earlier. Her father had been a minor functionary in local government, earning enough to feed his wife and three daughters, but with not a lot to spare. She had two sisters, both now married, with children. One lived in Sussex with her banker husband, an Englishman, while the other lived just across the French border in Menton, with her Italian restauranteur husband. At the age of twenty-two, with her degree in philosophy, Martina had set out to make her own way in the world. She met Marco when she applied for a job with his company. Within six months he proposed marriage and, though she did not pretend to love him, she accepted.

She saw the marriage as a deal, an arrangement from which both parties had expectations. Martina was determined to deliver what Marco wanted, a beautiful young wife to show off to his business acquaintances. In exchange, he offered her financial security. As time passed he realised that his wife had a fine brain as well as a beautiful body, and he brought her into the business at a senior level in the marketing department. Neither man nor wife had wanted children. Now, they had an honest relationship, and mutual fondness. She had not told him about our encounter in Baltimore, and he had not asked what she had been up to while there. Apparently, Marco cared little what she did, or with whom, just so long as she didn’t embarrass him by doing it with one of his close friends or business associates. Though several of these had tried their luck with her, she had not let her husband down.

She asked me why I had never married, a question that, when asked by others, I had deflected with a joke, but with this woman I felt that was somehow inappropriate. She clearly had a strong sense of humour, but she asked the question seriously. I can’t remember the exact words I used, but in essence I told her that I had never met a woman who didn’t come with some baggage, often in the shape of close relations. I did not have any intention of becoming a satellite in orbit around a wife’s kinfolk, nor did I have any ambition to produce children.
