For distributed teams, the Delphi approach can be used. In this approach, each team member estimates the stories individually. They submit their estimates, and a summarized report is prepared containing the results. Each team member then adjusts their estimate, and this process continues until a sufficient consensus is achieved.

It is also important to note that stories will be difficult to estimate if the team has not had much experience with the functionality needed to solution the story. This can occur quite often with RICEFW objects, such as interfaces. Interfaces can range from very simple to highly complex. You will need to reassure the team that they can give it their best guess, and the estimate will be refined during realization. A “spike” is normally used to investigate stories, such as this. A spike is a short task used to investigate and gain clarity on a complex story. Following the spike, the team will revise the stories’ estimate.
