Adjust the work to increase the challenge, perhaps by the team taking on bigger chunks of work that require more skill and effort to break down.

Move the people around to give them more challenging work, perhaps by moving to a new team with different technologies, customers or challenges.

In both these cases there can be concerns over disruption to the team, particularly if there are unhelpful measures being applied, such as Story Points.82 However, when this is a regular occurrence, as at Menlo, then teams are used to welcoming new members and adjusting to new types of work. The Tuckman cycle of ‘forming, storming, norming and performing’83 still happens around teams gelling together, but it completes much more quickly.

This type of dynamic Agile team is also better able to cope with other types of change than a stable, unchanging team – and we know from earlier chapters that change is the one thing that we can depend on in a VUCA environment.
