Chapter 9

Time had gotten away from them as they had searched and then fought the ancient dragon Zavna. It was nightfall by the time they climbed to the summit of the Scarlet Peaks and rejoined their dragons.

"Well?" Murro asked. "Will we have to search for another day?"

“No thanks to either of you,” Koll said. “We found the dragon.”

“It’s too late to go that far,” Nicai said.

Koll grimaced. “I don’t like the idea of waiting,” he said.

“Neither do I,” Nicai admitted, “but we do not know what will be waiting for us.”

He scoffed and motioned for everyone to follow him. “Do you really think that there’s anything to the prophecy?”

“We have to pursue this lead that we’re already following because of you,” she reminded him.

“But there’s something just waiting for us at the Smoldering Slopes?” He paused in front of a large cave, turned to face her, and rolled his eyes. “I find that hard to believe.”

Nicai walked past him into the cave. It was cold, but the heat from the dragons would warm it in no time.

“What is this prophecy?” Ivna asked, entering behind Murro. The cave was just large enough to house both dragons with some small spare space for the two riders.

“When times are the bleakest, there is hope to be found at the Smoldering Slopes,” Koll said as he leaned against the side of the cave.

“And darkness too,” Nicai added.

“Are you scared of the dark?” Koll asked. “I can have Ivna light a small fire for you.”

“I’m not scared. I just…” Nicai sat down. “Dragons are dying. We’ve been attacked by someone who was supposed to help us.”

“By someone who did help us if the prophecy is actually worthwhile,” Koll muttered.

Nicai ignored him. “Now we are told to go to a place that has darkness. I think it's vital to be wary."

“People have gone to the Slopes all the time,” Koll protested. “Flown by them, over them… nothing’s happened.”

“Yes, but times are bleak,” Nicai said. “Dragons are dying. There’s a reason for it, a source, an origin. Maybe we’ll find it there.”

“Maybe we shouldn’t get too close to the mountains then,” Murro said.

Nicai patted his side and rested against him. “Maybe not,” she murmured.

“Cowards, the both of you,” Koll said. “Unbelievable. I cannot believe we are stuck with you two. Just because you were the ones to watch Nagra fall and find her dead body—”

"And save Bal. Oh, and I was with Dunna when she died," Nicai added hotly.

He waved his hand as if to brush her words away. “None of that means you are ready for such an important quest.”

“And you are?” Nicai demanded. “What have you done that makes you so worthy?”

“I think my actions speak for themselves,” he said, clasping his hands behind his head.

“If you say so,” she murmured.

Koll pushed off against the wall and rocked onto his feet. “I’m hungry. Want to hunt with me?”

“I’m not,” Nicai muttered.

He eyed the dragons. “You two have to be hungry.”

“We can kill our own food,” Ivna said dryly.
