I walked into the Pickle Cafe expecting Dave to still be there. The whole group was gone, though. I took a moment to take a deep breath at the feeling of shock that ran through me over being ditched. Then I remembered I'd shut off my phone. He had probably texted me. Then again, maybe he hadn't because he never cared about me in the first place.

Truthfully, this was probably good. I had been about to go off on him, regardless of who was around. It would be better to yell at him in private. Then maybe I could still show my face in school on Monday without fear of retribution since I doubted Dave would want anyone to know how our date had gone.

I pulled out my phone, turned it on, and texted Dave without waiting to read any of the new texts he'd sent. There were quite a few, but I wasn't in the mood. I was too angry and I didn't want to second-guess myself. Where are you?

Within seconds, he replied. I'm over at the picnic benches with Mike and Ethan waiting for you guys. Join us? I was starting to get worried about you. I've been texting you.

That annoyed me. If he was so worried, why hadn't he gone to look for me? Oh yeah, because we weren't on a real date. Besides that, did he really think that I wanted to hang out with him and his friends the entire night when we were supposed to be on a romantic date? Even if it was all fake to begin with?

No. Why don't you join me at the fountain. Alone. I texted back.

He returned my text right away. Okay.

I wondered if Dave could sense that I was pissed. Or. Wait. I reread my text. He might think I wanted to make out with him or something. My insides twisted at the thought and my chest hurt. I pushed it away.

It didn't matter what Dave thought. Either way I was going to let him have it when I saw him. I walked over to the fountain to wait for Dave. It was off since it was winter. A bunch of people were sitting on it and talking or sipping hot chocolate from a nearby vendor. I sat down too. My butt started to freeze, but I barely noticed. My brain was too wrapped up in the tirade I was planning to unleash on Dave.

Only minutes after I arrived, I noticed Dave walking toward me. He saw me too. A smile lit up his face like he actually liked me. It's all fake, I told myself. He was a good actor. I took a deep breath and tried not to let it dissipate my anger any.

Dave walked up to me, "So, you wanted me alone?"

The suggestion in his voice made my stomach flip. Yeah, he was good. He got me every time. I squashed any and all feelings I had, though. It was time to have things out. I started to walk away from the fountain and toward the parking lot.
